Spotted: The Next-Gen KTM 390 Adventure and 390 Enduro
April 3, 2024April has arrived, and the Leh-Ladakh touring season is about to commence. Touring agencies have already started marketing themselves on major social media platforms, and bookings are underway. People have begun searching for information on Leh Ladakh trips, tour packages, bike trips, temperature, and the famous Leh Ladakh Zostel, according to the google search engine keyword rankings. I’ve been active on Reddit and Quora as well, finding that people have already started discussing tour packages, accessories to carry, and budget-friendly riding gear.
So, here are some of the best budget-friendly and reliable protective gear recommendations for your next trip to Leh-Ladakh. Since you will encounter water crossings and off-road conditions, essential protective gear like a good helmet, waterproof gloves, riding jacket, riding pants or knee guards, riding boots, and a hydration pack are necessary for a trouble-free ride.
Numerous riding gear brands are available on the market today, but I’ll suggest options based on my experience and that of my friends.
Helmet
A good helmet is a mandatory and essential gear you should always wear when riding a bike. When choosing a helmet, consider the following for a comfortable long ride:
- The helmet shouldn’t be too loose or tight, allowing for some breathable space and featuring a D-lock for safety measures.
- Avoid using smoked or dark visors, as they may be comfortable during the day but become difficult to use after sunset. Opt for a clear visor and always carry a cleaning spray and microfiber cloth.
- Don’t plan to use an off-road helmet, as these may cause discomfort during long-distance rides due to wind blasts pushing your head back.
I recommend the SMK helmet, which is budget-friendly, visually appealing, and reliable. It also features anti-fog Pinlock inserts. You can also consider brands like MT, LS2, or the popular AXOR helmets that many YouTubers promote these days.
Riding Jacket
Mesh jackets:
These jackets allow air to pass through while riding and often come with a waterproof liner. They are perfect for warmer climates and offer breathability without compromising on protection.
Textile jackets:
Made of durable and abrasion-resistant materials, textile jackets provide excellent protection. They can be worn in various weather conditions, thanks to removable thermal and waterproof liners.
When choosing a riding jacket, it’s important to prioritize comfort. If possible, try it on for at least 10 minutes in the store before purchasing. I have used both Rynox and Aspida jackets for my rides and can recommend either brand. Additionally, some of my friends have had positive experiences with Riding Brotherhood jackets, finding them comfortable for longer rides. Consider your specific needs and preferences when selecting a jacket to ensure it’s the best fit for you.
Riding Gloves
Full gauntlet gloves:
These gloves cover the entire hand and wrist, offering maximum protection against abrasions and impacts.
Waterproof gloves:
Designed to keep your hands dry during wet weather, these gloves may cause sweating due to reduced breathability.
Mesh gloves:
Ideal for summer rides, mesh gloves offer excellent ventilation but are not suitable for winter riding, as the rider may feel cold.
Over time, I have used both Aspida and Rynox gloves for my rides. For long rides, I prefer and recommend full gauntlet gloves, as they offer more comprehensive protection. For regular city riding, Rynox gloves provide a suitable option. Personally, I don’t find waterproof gloves comfortable due to my hands sweating excessively in them. Keep your preferences in mind when choosing between these glove options for your riding needs.
Riding Pants
Textile riding pants:
These pants are made of durable and abrasion-resistant materials, providing protection against impacts and road rash.
Mesh riding pants:
Offering breathability and comfort, mesh riding pants are suitable for hot weather conditions but may not provide warmth during colder months.
When it comes to riding pants, my top choice is Rynox. Their pants are incredibly comfortable and feature strategically placed zipper vents for maximum breathability, ensuring you never feel restricted during your rides. Rynox riding pants also offer excellent safety features, with protective guards in all the essential areas. If your budget is around 7-8k, I highly recommend investing in a pair of Rynox riding pants for their unbeatable combination of comfort and protection.
Knee Guards
Knee guards offer protection against impacts and abrasions but may require adjustment during every halt or when hopping on the bike to ensure a proper fit. During my early riding days, I frequently used Mototech knee guards. Although they provided good overall protection for my knees, I found them slightly irritating as they often shifted from their ideal position. Since I took numerous tea and water breaks, I had to adjust the guards each time. Despite this issue, they effectively shielded my knees from flying rocks and stones while off-roading. For knee guards, I also recommend considering Rynox. However, make sure to try them on before making a purchase to ensure a proper fit.
Riding Boots
Riding boots provide protection to the feet, ankles, and shins against injuries. Choose a pair that offers a balance of protection, comfort, and flexibility. When it comes to riding boots, if your budget is around 5k, I recommend checking out Royal Enfield boots. They offer adequate protection at an affordable price point. However, if you’re willing to invest around 10k, I strongly suggest considering either BBG or Raida boots. These brands provide excellent overall protection, but keep in mind that all riding boots require a break-in period, during which they may feel stiff. To ensure maximum comfort on long rides, I advise against wearing brand-new boots on the first day, as they may cause discomfort until they’re properly broken in.
Hydration Pack
A hydration pack is essential for staying hydrated during long rides. It consists of a water reservoir and a drinking tube, allowing easy access to water without stopping the bike. During your journey on Ladakh’s mountainous highways, dehydration and exhaustion are common challenges. To maintain your energy levels and stay hydrated, it’s essential to drink water consistently throughout your ride. As you’ll likely be traveling with a group, taking multiple breaks may not always be an option. Investing in a hydration pack allows you to sip water as you go, ensuring you remain energized while enjoying the breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains along the way. I have experience using both Rynox and Raida hydration packs on my rides. While both serve their purpose effectively, I found the Raida pack to be more sleek and comfortable for extended trips. It’s essential to consider comfort when choosing a hydration pack, as you’ll likely wear it for long periods during your adventures.
If you find these protective gear options pricey, consider the potential costs of medical bills should an accident occur. Investing in high-quality gear can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries, and when comparing these prices to medical expenses, the cost of proper protection becomes a much more affordable choice. Prioritize your safety and well-being by choosing reliable equipment that can help prevent costly consequences.
